From First Med Urgent Care: Summer BBQ Safety Tips

First Med Urgent Care: Getting ready to cookout!

At First Med Urgent Care, we know that with everything in life there is always a risk, BBQ cookouts included. Just because there is a risk that doesn’t mean there aren’t some precautions people can take to make the risks a little less likely to interrupt your day. Wise men say that “knowing is half the battle,” so when we learn what the top risks are, we know better how to reduce them. According to the United States Department of Agriculture there are several steps you can take to ensure a safer BBQ experience. Of course, our urgent care staff want you to be safe also so we bring you this summer’s BBQ safety tips derived partially from the USDA’s provided information and some of our own thoughts.

1.) Have a fire extinguisher on hand, just in case! This is just good, common sense. It would be wise to have one person in charge of the grill at all times. Never walk off!

2.) For coals:  Lighter fluid causes all kinds of problems and you should really be careful when adding fuel to the fire. For gas: Regularly check the gas grill for bugs, debris, etc. to avoid an obstruction in the path of the fuel.

3.) Keep yourself safe from food born illnesses caused by bacteria. Always keep your meat chilled until serving time. After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served, at 140°F or warmer. The second you are finish serving it, it needs to go back in the refrigerator.

4.) Be careful not to suck in too much smoke. The smoke coming from the grill contains carbon monoxide and other harmful substances.

5.) Keep your grill clean. Grease build-up can cause fires!

6.) Keep a sound mind. Grilling can be dangerous if you’re drinking alcoholic beverages which impairs your judgment. If you’re going to drink, do it after all cooking is complete and the fire is put out (assuming that other safety factors are in place for you to drink).
