Urgent Care Help: Understand Strep Throat

First Med Urgent Care Health Tips

Don’t you just hate that feeling when you know you’re getting sick? It’s awful when one day you feel just fine and the next your throat is harboring a disease causing bacteria. First Med Urgent Care has seen an increase in illness since fall rolled around. One common illness which pops up suddenly is strep throat.  Sometimes strep or Streptococcus pyrogenes consists of bacteria that can live dormant in your throat. The normally dormant strep organisms can awaken in times of stress or if your immune system is weakened. If you find that one day you wake up to your throat hurting, you’re running a high fever, and all your energy has been zapped then you just might have strep throat.

Common symptoms of strep throat include:

1.) Severe sore throat without coughing, sneezing, or other cold symptoms.
2.) Pain or difficulty with swallowing.
3.) Fever over 101 °F (38.3 °C).
4.) Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
5.) White or yellow spots or coating on the throat and tonsils.
6.) Bright red throat or dark red spots on the roof of the mouth at the back near the throat.
7.) Swollen tonsils.

Strep throat is one illness that should not be ignored. It can cause more serious illnesses, a serious heart condition (rheumatic fever) and it is also highly contagious to other people. For this reason, it is extremely important to seek out treatment at an urgent care as soon as possible. If you feel you may have strep throat, but aren’t one hundred percent certain, come in anyway. Our urgent care has the ability to perform a very fast and simple strep test. First Med is a walk-in urgent care medical clinic so there is no appointment necessary.  We are open 7 days a week 8:00am – 7:30pm.
