First Med Urgent Care Topic: National Folic Acid Awareness Week

Urgent Care News: Bringing awareness

The month of January is many things to a lot of people. It’s the start of a new year and for most it provides the opportunity to have a fresh outlook on healthy choices and life itself. As with many other months, January is a month of awareness. Thus, the urgent care topic for today is National Folic Acid Awareness Week (January 3rd through the 9th). This week is centered around educating women about the benefits of folic acid.

The National Council on Folic Acid, managed by the Spina Bifida Association, has a mission to improve health by promoting the benefits and consumption of folic acid. This is mostly beneficial to pregnant women as the power of vitamin B found in the folic acid plays an important role. Folic acid is necessary for proper cell growth. If taken before and during early pregnancy, it has been concluded that folic acid can aid in reducing neural tube birth defects such as Spina Bifida.

400 micrograms of folic acid is the recommended daily amount for women who could possibly become pregnant. There are a few ways that women can consume the daily amount and they are:

1. Via fortified foods such as pasta, grains or healthy breakfast cereals.
2. A daily multi-vitamin
3. Eating a variety of foods associated with a healthy diet, including vegetables and fruits.

Of course, many things can affect a baby. Genetic and environmental variations, including family genes and things women may come in contact with during pregnancy also play a role. Therefore, taking folic acid cannot guarantee having a healthy baby, but it can help.
