Urgent Care Topic: Cholesterol
You’ve probably heard high cholesterol mentioned a lot in association with various health screenings, but what you should know is that high cholesterol is something that can occur in anyone young or old. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 102 million American adults (20 years or older) have higher than healthy cholesterol levels. Even one-fifth of America’s youth (age 12-19) have at least on abnormal lipid level.
This is pretty serious stuff! In fact, when your cholesterol is too high, it can build up on the walls of your arteries and form plaque. The plaque buildup can slow or block blood flow and lead to more serious conditions such as; hardening of your arteries, Coronary Artery Disease, Angina, Heart Attack and Stroke.
Whether you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol at an urgent care or already being treated, you should know what to speak with a doctor about in order to manage your condition the best way possible.
Be willing to discuss some of the following:
- Whether you have stress, sleep troubles or anything new happening in your life.
- When your cholesterol was last checked.
- If you’ve made any diet changes.
- If you take medication for cholesterol and whether you are consistent in taking it.
There is no direct symptoms in the vast majority of cases, so a blood test is the only way to know whether or not your cholesterol level is above 240 milligrams/deciliter. If you’re over the age of 20, it’s a good idea to start getting your cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis.
