Google has a powerful “mind” and you may have contributed to it’s nationwide Flu tracking ability. Have you searched for Flu information using the search engine recently?

Below is the explanation from Google on how they can track trends in the flu season with the searches they receive and traditional flu surveillance systems:

Each week, millions of users around the world search for health information online. As you might expect, there are more flu-related searches during flu season.

We have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. Of course, not every person who searches for “flu” is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when all the flu-related search queries are added together. We compared our query counts with traditional flu surveillance systems and found that many search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening. By counting how often we see these search queries, we can estimate how much flu is circulating in different countries and regions around the world.

Pretty cool, huh? We thought so.

Compare it to past years…Does the pattern look like last year’s? Do you think this flu season will be intense like it was in January? What was the most intense flu year? From research, we can learn that the flu season hasn’t hit it’s peek yet, but it is gearing up. Now is the time to get your flu vaccinations. It takes two weeks for the flu shot to fully take effect, so get in to one of our urgent care clinics soon before the peek hits Oklahoma in the months of December through February.

Trick or Treating in Oklahoma – Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids. Many Oklahoma homes are very receptive to trick or treaters and encourage it with their many decorations celebrating the holiday and the fall season. But no matter how peaceful you think a neighborhood to be, you should always take precautions and be on your guard when going up to a stranger’s house, or letting your children go. Children 12 and under should ALWAYS be accompanied by an adult when trick or treating.

To help ensure your children have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), an organization dedicated to the health of all children.

ALL DRESSED UP:

– Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
– Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
– Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes.
– When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
– If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
– Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.
– Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
– Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost.

CARVING A NICHE:

– Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting.
– Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.
– Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended.

HOME SAFE HOME:

– To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
– Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
– Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps.
– Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

ON THE TRICK-OR-TREAT TRAIL:

– A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
– If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home.
– Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
– Because pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween, remind Trick-or-Treaters.
– Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going.
– Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
– Carry a cellphone for quick communication.
– Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
– If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic.
– Never cut across yards or use alleys.
– Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out driveways.
– Don’t assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn’t mean others will!
– Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN:

– A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.
– Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils.
– Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
– Try to ration treats for the days following Halloween.

The holiday seasons are upon us and you can’t afford to get sick.  You’re preparing Halloween costumes for yourself or your kids and you’re driving the kids to Halloween events.  You’re routing for your favorite team at football games, and you’re hosting watch parties, Halloween parties, Christmas parties…and don’t forget about ALL that food that needs to be bought and prepared.  Plus the Christmas shopping.

Or that trip to the relative’s house you’ve planned. You CAN’T get sick. Sometimes it feels like getting sick around this time of year is inevitable though. But there are certain reasons why people tend to get sicker quicker and more often this time of year, and if we let you in on those, you’ll have a better chance of staying well for all your events.

Number one, we are simply more busy and simply have more on our plate and simply feel like we are going crazy. Who hasn’t felt crazy last minute Christmas shopping in the mall? It happens. But the stress that comes along with all that can, in a round about way, weaken you emotionally and also physically.

That stress plays a part in weakening our immune systems. When you are weak, you’re more susceptible to germs.

Secondly, sometimes you loose sleep this time of year because there is just not enough time in the day to cram everything in. Lack of sleep can also render you more susceptible to germs because your body has not had proper rest, something that is essential for growth and recovery.

Chronic worry and emotional stress can trigger a host of health problems. It can trigger hormones that can boost blood sugar levels and triglycerides (blood fats) that can be used by the body for fuel. When the excessive fuel in the blood isn’t used for physical activities, the chronic anxiety and outpouring of stress hormones can have serious physical consequences, including suppression of the immune system.

It isn’t the stress that makes you ill. Rather, it’s the effect responses such as excessive worrying and anxiety have on various interacting systems (immune system, your heart and blood vessels, certain glands, hormones that are secreted) that can bring on the physical illness. There are things you can do, though, including lifestyle changes, to alter the way you respond.

What Lifestyle Changes Might Help Excessive Worriers?

Although excessive worrying and high anxiety can cause an imbalance in your body, there are many options you have that can re-establish harmony of mind, body, and spirit. Here are a few options that you can consider:

  • Talk to your doctor. Start by talking with your primary care physician. Get a thorough physical exam to make sure other health problems are not fueling your feelings of anxiety.
  • Exercise daily. With your doctor’s approval, begin a regular exercise program.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Stress and worrying provoke some people to eat too little, others too much, or to eat unhealthy foods. Keep your health in mind when worrying nudges you toward the fridge.
  • Drink caffeine in moderation. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, which can trigger adrenaline and make you feel nervous and jittery.
  • Be conscious of your worries. Do not dwell on them. Set aside 15 minutes each day where you allow yourself to focus on problems and fears — and then vow to let them go after the 15 minutes is up.
  • Learn to relax. Relaxation techniques can trigger the relaxation response — a physiological state characterized by a feeling of warmth and quiet mental alertness. 
  • Have a strong social network. Loneliness may be as much a risk factor for disease as having high cholesterol or smoking cigarettes. Be a friend to make a friend.
  • Talk to a professional therapist. Psychological counseling can help you develop appropriate coping strategies to deal with issues that trigger excessive worrying. If you have an urgent care need in Edmond or if you just need a vaccination or physical exam, we are your doctors. Flu shots bring a lot of people in this time of year, and our professional and caring staff makes it a quick and as painless as possible experience for you or your child. Dr. LaBahn: A New Friendly Face At 104th

First Med Urgent Care: Meet the doctor

Dr. LaBahn has moved to our newest location at 1140 SW 104th (Between S. Western and S. Penn). He has been with First Med Urgent Care since June 2011. Dr. LaBahn is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and is also experienced in emergency medicine.

He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. Then he went on to complete medical school at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 2004, and lastly completed his residency in family medicine at Christus Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program in San Antonio, Texas. He has worked in both family and emergency medicine in Fort Polk, LA and OKC.

Dr. LaBahn is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. LaBahn and his wife, who is a pediatrician, live in Norman. They have four children, two of which are adopted and they are in the process of adopting a fifth child. They have five-year-old twin girls, a four-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter. They hope to bring their new son home from China in December or January.
Dr. LaBahn is a dedicated and compassionate physician and First Med is thrilled to have him as part of our family.
