First Med Urgent Care recognizes that college students have been working hard this year! Our urgent care staff know how real the struggle is when the final few months of the fall semester comes to a rapid close. As the stress of final exams weigh heavily on college students, their health may not be in the forefront of their minds. The health risks on a college campus are scarier than most students think. One of the most common illnesses circulating on college campuses is food poisoning or foodborne illness. This dangerous illness can show up without warning. First Med Urgent Care is here to reveal this nasty sickness!

These symptoms are caused by bacteria or other pathogens in food, therefore; dangerous food-handling techniques must be avoided. It’s shocking how many students can identify the Pythagorean Theorem, yet they don’t have the basic knowledge regarding food safety. You can avoid foodborne illness by washing your hands properly. In addition, the common foods that pose problems are related to meats, eggs and dairy. For this reason First Med Urgent Care staff suggest avoiding undercooked meats, avoiding runny eggs and make certain your dairy products are fully pasteurized. If eating out at a restaurant, students should not hesitate to send food back to the server or to dispose of it if it is cooked improperly. Be safe out there, everyone!
