First Med Urgent Care: Dealing with Acid Reflux and Sore Throats

When you wake up in the morning with that coarse, sandpaper feeling in your throat, followed by annoying, awful soreness, you may first blame it on something like a cold or the flu. However, one thing you probably won’t blame is acid reflux but did you know that it can also cause sore throats? First Med Urgent Care is here to inform you about this common sore throat instigator that is often overlooked.

First, let’s get to know your esophagus. This muscular tube is what carries food from your mouth to the stomach and connects the throat to the stomach. Acid reflux is stomach acid coming up from your esophagus. Naturally, burning stomach acid coming up through the esophagus can also cause irritation in the throat.

So, how can you tell that your sore throat is being caused by acid reflux and not one of the other common causes of a sore throat?

Not everyone will have the same symptoms, but if you have one or more of the following on this urgent care checklist your sore throat might be from acid reflux:

  • You’re not running a fever, but you do have a sore throat
  • You have chronic hoarseness or wheezing
  • You have chest pain accompanied by pain in the neck, jaw, arms, or legs
  • You have shortness of breath, weakness, irregular pulse, or sweating
  • You have a dry cough
  • You have trouble swallowing
  • You feel as though there is a lump in your throat
  • You have extreme stomach pain

If you’ve tried over the counter solutions for more than two weeks and your throat is still feeling sore or you still have other symptoms indicative of severe acid reflux, then you need to see a doctor. Our First Med Urgent Care is available to help diagnose your symptoms every day of the week from 8 am to 7:30 pm. For faster service, we recommend checking in online, which can be done here.
