Urgent Care Reports: Sore Throats Due To Acid Reflux

First Med Urgent Care: Providing You With Information

When that dreaded sand paper feeling starts creeping in your throat, followed by the awful soreness, you may be inclined to automatically blame a cold, the flu, or strep throat, but did you know acid reflux can cause sore throats, too? Our urgent care staff is here to inform you about this common sore throat cause which is often overlooked.

First, let’s talk a little bit about your esophagus. This muscular tube carries food from your mouth and connects the throat or pharynx to the stomach. When acid from your stomach comes up through your esophagus it can cause irritation in the throat. This is what our urgent care doctors would commonly refer to as acid reflux.

How do you know that it’s not one of the other more common problems causing your sore throat?

Not everyone will have all of the same symptoms, but if you have one or more of the following symptoms on this urgent care checklist you might have acid reflux:

  • You’re not running a fever, but you do have a sore throat
  • You have chronic hoarseness or wheezing
  • You have chest pain accompanied by pain in the neck, jaw, arms, or legs
  • You have shortness of breath, weakness, irregular pulse, or sweating
  • You have a dry cough
  • You have trouble swallowing
  • You feel as though there is a lump in your throat
  • You have extreme stomach pain

If you’ve already tried over-the-counter medications for more than two weeks and you still have symptoms indicative of severe acid reflux , it’s time to see a doctor. Our urgent care staff is available to help you with a diagnosis every day of the week from 8am to 7:30pm. If you need to see a doctor, we recommend checking in online for faster service.
