We also talked about how some of those people decide that starving themselves is a quick fix, but in reality this choice can cause more problems. We discussed how severe fatigue and muscle deterioration can be causes of malnutrition. If you have questioned whether this “dieting” decision is right for you, our urgent care doctors have provided a few more dangerous reasons why you should reconsider.

Let’s take a look at what other detrimental side effects can be caused by starving yourself for weight loss:

1.) Slower Metabolism: It may seem ironic, but rather than help people lose weight, many times starving the body leads to having an even slower metabolism. This happens, because when the body enters starvation mode it starts to conserve the energy previously stored in order to survive. The brain will trigger the thyroid to slow down the metabolic rate. Once you do start eating again the body is no longer able to get back to burning calories which can prohibit weight loss in the future.

2.) Serious Health Problems: Even if you do manage to starve yourself to the point of rapid weight loss, you’ll be inviting a slew of other complications to possibly develop in your body. Improper nutrition and extreme weight loss practices can lead to heart attacks, seizures, bone health problems, and inflammation in various parts of the body which can cause ongoing pain. Some people may even experience psychological, behavioral, and emotional disorders as a result of malnutrition.

In part one, we listed a few options for losing weight that weren’t so extreme. Our urgent care staff has come up with a few more things you can do to help yourself move in the right direction in a more healthy way. Consider the following:

  • Try bringing a packed, healthy lunch with you to work or school.
  • Need motivation? Use the buddy system by inviting a friend to workout with you.
  • Brush your teeth after eating to prevent overeating. This can be a psychological trigger to your brain that mealtime is over.
  • Choose a smaller plate to help keep your portions more controlled.
  • If you have to eat out, immediately ask for a to-go container and pack away half of your meal for later. Out of sight, out of mind!

With the realization that summer is only a few months away a lot of people get this fear-driven impulse to lose weight quickly. Sometimes, people who are unhappy with their body feel that exercising doesn’t fall within their allotted time frame for every day life. This often leads those same types of people to believe that starving themselves is an effective weight loss method; however, doing so has a lot of dangerous repercussions. If you’ve found yourself feeling like starving your body is a good idea, our urgent care doctors would advise you otherwise and encourage healthy practices.

Not convinced with that statement alone? Then, let’s take a look at two of the dangers caused by starving yourself:

1.) Severe Fatigue: Crash dieting deprives your body of important nutrients which will cause your body to stop functioning properly. Not eating for an extended period of time will lead to severe fatigue and headaches which may cause you to stop being able to complete normal tasks properly.

2.) Muscle Loss: Muscles are just like other parts of your body that rely on good nutrition to stay alert. Through nutrients and blood, the muscles become flexible and strong. Without the right amount of nutrition your muscles will begin to decrease, or waste away. This is known as muscles atrophy.

Options for losing weight don’t have to be so extreme. Our urgent care staff has come up with a few things you can do to help yourself move in the right direction in a more healthy way. Consider the following:

  • Get plenty of sleep as lack of sleep can spike hunger!
  • Keep a food journal to help you stay on track.
  • Don’t give in to cravings. Try drinking more water, instead.
  • It’s so important we’ll mention it twice– drink more water!
  • Try even the smallest exercise such as a walk around the block or a soft jog in place while you watch television.

There has been a great deal of controversy surrounding soy products and foods with soy. The most common argument against soy is that the isoflavones can bind to estrogen receptors and affect thyroid hormones. There have also been debates about soy increasing risks of certain cancers, but evidence of that is not conclusive. Others simply shouldn’t consume soy, because they’ve developed an allergy. How do you know if you have a soy allergy? First Med Urgent Care lists the common symptoms for your knowledge, today.

Luckily, a soy allergy for most people isn’t serious, but can be very uncomfortable. If you have an allergy to soy it will most likely follow the same pattern as any other food allergy in that symptoms will usually appear within a few minutes up to a few hours after eating foods with the allergen. The following are documented signs that you may have a soy allergy:

  • Tingling in the mouth
  • Hives or itchy skin
  • Swelling of lips, face, tongue, throat, or other body parts
  • Wheezing, runny nose, or difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Skin redness

Our urgent care staff cautions you to pay attention to the following, more extreme, signs that you are having a severe allergic reaction (also known as anaphylaxis):

  • Difficulty breathing due to throat swelling
  • Shock, with severe drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or loss of consciousness

If possible seek out urgent care treatment before things get out of control with your allergy, but if the symptoms listed in the anaphylaxis section above happen to you then you need to skip straight to emergency treatment!

One of the most popular “trouble spots” for men and women are their arms, chest, and triceps. Many men are self conscious about their upper body shape while many women are worried about the “pudge” that may form around the armpit region and their arms. Thus, these people tend to turn to push-ups as a primary way to exercise these troublesome areas, but be careful as bad form can lead to lower back pain. As the new year starts out with everyone aiming to get in shape, our urgent care staff felt it would be a great time to provide some information on performing proper push-ups.

It might sound silly to hear an urgent care doctor say that as a side-effect of pushing yourself up improperly that you can cause stress on your spine, but it’s true. It is all in the way one positions themselves. For example, when you lower yourself down, do not let your hips sag as this is the most common mistake people make! Most often allowing the hips to dip too low is a result of having a weak core so it would be smart to focus on building up some core strength in the abs to help yourself prevent injury in the lower back (planks and leg lifts are a nice option).

Our urgent care staff hopes that you’ll agree that injuring yourself beyond repair is not worth the risk. To complete a proper push-up know that you should be creating a straight line with your body from your shoulders to your heels. You’re going to need to make use of your abs and quadriceps to keep yourself engaged in the proper form. As you lower down to the floor, it’s important to remember your straight line posture and push yourself back up in a steady motion. Don’t worry about pumping in the reps too quickly, just take it as slow as you need to go.

If you happen to get a little sore, that’s obviously normal and you’ll just need to rest.

  • Wear appropriate shoes: Choose a practical shoe with good traction when having to walk on slippery sidewalks, stairs, and slopes.
  • Take a cell phone for help: If you find yourself leaving the house during inclement weather having a cell phone to connect with friends or family is a smart move. In case you do fall down you’ll have the necessary means to call for help.
  • Use that sidewalk salt: It may be silly to only purchase salt for a minimal time, but the salt does work to keep pathways clear so that you can avoid slips.
  • Try exercising indoors: If you’re an avid exerciser remember that winter conditions may make it unsafe for you to stay active outside. That doesn’t mean stop working out! Simply consider moving your routine indoors.
  • Get regular check-ups: Taking care of your body on an ongoing basis is the best way to ensure overall health. Getting check-ups by an urgent care doctor to make sure you’re in great condition may be able to help you prevent injuries.

Influenza (or the the flu) really started hitting hard around October, but now that the weather has cooled off quite a bit more a lot more cases are circulating. Patients that failed to get the flu shot early on may be at greater risk now that the flu infection is becoming more prevalent. While First Med Urgent Care staff are here to care for you if you need us we’d like to provide you with some tips for avoiding the flu this Christmas season.

  • Dress warmly: This might seem too simple, but it works! Since our summer and fall weren’t really all that terrible it makes sense that when it did finally get chilly your body would be more susceptible. To avoid feeling that icy sting, wear plenty of layers to keep warm.
  • Keep your hand clean: People sneezing, coughing, and rubbing their runny noses are everywhere and spreading germs! The best thing you can do is wash your hands as often as possible. If you use the same hand drying towel, consider washing it often, as well. It may be best to use disposable paper towels (and if you’re environmentally conscious recyclable ones are a great option).
  • Eat the right foods: Choose foods with plenty of Vitamin C and Zinc for an immune system booster. Vitamin C can be found in a lot of fruits and vegetables. Zinc can be found in meat, oysters, eggs, seafood, black- eyed peas and wheat germ.
  • Drink plenty of water: Drinking water is vital as it flushes out kidneys washing away any toxins that may have entered the body. It’s one of the easiest ways to keep the flu out.
  • Get plenty of rest: Maintaining a regular sleeping schedule keeps your body happy and relaxed. Doing so helps to avoid stress on the body. When you’re less stressed you can naturally fight off illness more effectively.

Have you ever visited an urgent care for stomach pain? When you have stomach pain it’s important to determine what is causing it as in some cases it could be Helicobacter pylori bacteria also known as H. pylori. This is a bacteria that is more likely to develop in children due to lack of proper hygiene, but it also causes infection in about 1 of 3 adults in the United States. Our urgent care team is here to discuss a little more about this tiny bacteria.

The H. pylori bacteria may not cause symptoms right away, if at all, but they can lead to other conditions. In some cases, peptic ulcers, an inflammatory condition called gastritis, or an increased risk of cancer can occur. This is typically when the stomach pain occurs. Due to their spiral shape, the H. pylori bacteria can easily penetrate the stomach lining where your body’s immune cells are not able to reach them. These bacteria are able to survive in even the most acidic stomach.

Luckily, most cases of H. pylori are treated with one round of antibiotics, but depending on the severity treatment plans may vary. For those who develop other illnesses caused by a lingering H. Pylori infection, the outlook will depend on the problem, how soon it’s diagnosed, and how it’s treated. As stated by Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

5 Tips For Fighting Against Sinus Pain

When seasons change it’s common for different allergens to cause people to suffer from sinus pain. There are different types of pain that people experience which can include throbbing headaches to pressure around the eyes, nose and cheeks. When things get really painful it may be a case of sinusitis. This pain can be the result of bacteria in the mucus causing inflammation. When that happens it is better known as a sinus infection. So, what can you do? Today, our urgent care is listing tips to help you fight against sinus pain.

1.) Avoid smoke: Try to avoid going around people who smoke and if you smoke, it might be a good time to consider quitting. Cigarette smoke irritates the sinus passages causing them to swell and restrict the flow of mucus.

2.) Use a humidifier: Regulating the moisture in the air of your home can help cut back on sinus irritation from dry air. The level of humidity should be 30-60%.

3.) Inhale steam: Taking a warm bath or hovering over a bowl of warm water with a towel over your head can unclog sinuses and decrease pain temporarily. Try putting some Eucalyptus oil in the water to breathe in. A hot shower can also do wonders.

4.) Eat properly: They say you are what you eat. That’s why it’s important to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet. Try some warm foods and don’t be afraid to add a little spice like cayenne pepper to really open up the nasal passages.

5.) Get rest: Sleeping is important in general, but even more so when your body is off balance. When your sinuses act up get a good night’s sleep to help your immune system fight off germs that cause infections.

These are just a few simple rules to follow that may help you find some relief or even to prevent sinus infections from happening. Every year influenza (flu) statistics are released by the Oklahoma State Department of Health to indicate that society is still greatly impacted by the illness. Hundreds of people are hospitalized and several people have died from the infection. Of course, if someone is already sick with it they can spread the flu to others even before they feel sick. Do you have the flu?

Here are some symptoms that are common signs you have this infection:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

While some people do get very serious symptoms that need treatment, others may experience only mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs. If you get sick and have mild symptoms you should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care.
