First Med Urgent Care: Preventing Hip Fractures This Winter

Urgent Care: Safety Tips For Not Falling

Winter time in Oklahoma can be quite brutal, mostly due to the fact that it’s unpredictable. Our urgent care staff likes to prepare as much as possible in the event that icy conditions become a problem during the winter months. Taking precautions is important, because unexpected falling can lead to hip fractures, especially for the elderly. Today, our urgent care staff would like to provide some safety tips to keep you upright so that hip fractures can be avoided this winter.

  • Wear appropriate shoes: Choose a practical shoe with good traction when having to walk on slippery sidewalks, stairs, and slopes.
  • Take a cell phone for help: If you find yourself leaving the house during inclement weather having a cell phone to connect with friends or family is a smart move. In case you do fall down you’ll have the necessary means to call for help.
  • Use that sidewalk salt: It may be silly to only purchase salt for a minimal time, but the salt does work to keep pathways clear so that you can avoid slips.
  • Try exercising indoors: If you’re an avid exerciser remember that winter conditions may make it unsafe for you to stay active outside. That doesn’t mean stop working out! Simply consider moving your routine indoors.
  • Get regular check-ups: Taking care of your body on an ongoing basis is the best way to ensure overall health. Getting check-ups by an urgent care doctor to make sure you’re in great condition may be able to help you prevent injuries.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Maintaining your health and forming strong bones starts with your diet, too. Consider plenty of foods rich in calcium and Vitamin D.

We hope you’ve found this informative!

If you should fall down and find that your hip isn’t fractured, but there are some minor injuries causing you pain, our urgent care would be happy to take a look.

Urgent Care- Sinus Pain

5 Tips For Fighting Against Sinus Pain

Sinus Headaches And Other Pains

When seasons change it’s common for different allergens to cause people to suffer from sinus pain. There are different types of pain that people experience which can include throbbing headaches to pressure around the eyes, nose and cheeks. When things get really painful it may be a case of sinusitis. This pain can be the result of bacteria in the mucus causing inflammation. When that happens it is better known as a sinus infection. So, what can you do? Today, our urgent care is listing tips to help you fight against sinus pain.

1.) Avoid smoke: Try to avoid going around people who smoke and if you smoke, it might be a good time to consider quitting. Cigarette smoke irritates the sinus passages causing them to swell and restrict the flow of mucus.

2.) Use a humidifier: Regulating the moisture in the air of your home can help cut back on sinus irritation from dry air. The level of humidity should be 30-60%.

3.) Inhale steam: Taking a warm bath or hovering over a bowl of warm water with a towel over your head can unclog sinuses and decrease pain temporarily. Try putting some Eucalyptus oil in the water to breathe in. A hot shower can also do wonders.

4.) Eat properly: They say you are what you eat. That’s why it’s important to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet. Try some warm foods and don’t be afraid to add a little spice like cayenne pepper to really open up the nasal passages.

5.) Get rest: Sleeping is important in general, but even more so when your body is off balance. When your sinuses act up get a good night’s sleep to help your immune system fight off germs that cause infections.

These are just a few simple rules to follow that may help you find some relief or even to prevent sinus infections from happening. If you experience an episode of sinusitis and need relief, you can visit any one of First Med Urgent Care’s clinics. Walk-ins are welcome at our clinics and we’re open from 8:00am – 7:30pm.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Is Apple Cider Vinegar Good For Weight Loss?

Apple Cider Vinegar And Your Health

With school over and the warm summer months full steam ahead, many people are trying to get in their best shape for trips to the lake, the beaches down south, or afternoons at water parks across the state. Apple cider vinegar has been mentioned in many circles as the magical liquid for weight loss. The question on everyone’s mind is “does it really work?”

Today, First Med Urgent Care will be going over some important details you should be aware of when thinking about drinking apple cider vinegar. First, we want to address the whole theory revolving this miracle weight loss drink.

The only documented study for weight loss by consuming apple cider vinegar was conducted in Japan. In this study 175 obese, but reportedly, otherwise healthy individuals drank either water or vinegar daily for 12 weeks. The results only showed that those who used vinegar had only lost 1-2 pounds over the 3 month period and gained all the weight back upon completion of the study. This suggests it may not be the best method for weight loss. Trust this, First Med Urgent Care staff sure wishes it were that easy!

That being said, it has been reported by Carol Johnston, PhD, at Arizona State University that apple cider vinegar does appear to have positive effects on blood sugar by somewhat blocking starches from being digested. This means that it could benefit those with diabetes by keeping blood sugar in check. It can also help with digestion.

To make sure that you are taking in apple cider vinegar safely here are a few key rules to follow:

  • For the best benefit make certain to purchase unrefined, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. It should look cloudy with a blob in the bottle. That blob is known as “the mother” and it is where the helpful probiotics and beneficial bacteria are coming from.
  • Do NOT drink the apple cider vinegar straight out of the bottle. To prevent burning your esophagus or stripping your tooth enamel with the highly acidic vinegar, dilute 1-2 tablespoons in a large glass of water. Only drink it with your meals or two times daily.

We, here at First Med Urgent Care, hope that you have found this information helpful. Be safe and remember that hard work, exercise, and healthy diet are the best ways to get your body in the best shape of your life.
