First Med Urgent Care On Sexually Transmitted Diseases
According to the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC), each year there are as many as 700,000 new cases of Gonorrhea in the United States. When it comes to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), like Gonorrhea, there are a lot of misunderstandings. First Med Urgent Care loves to help patients understand the truth about infections and today, the focus is on Gonorrhea. The truth is that this disease has been transmitted more and more, so it’s even more important to know the facts right now.
Let’s examine some common misunderstandings about Gonorrhea.
Misunderstanding #1: Gonorrhea can’t be transmitted if one doesn’t have intercourse, right?
The truth is that Gonorrhea is a serious STD and can be transmitted from ANY type of sexual interaction.
Misunderstanding #2: If any sexual activity can spread it, one could get it from a toilet seat, swimming pool or hot tub, right?
The truth is that Gonorrhea is not spread through any of the above mentioned sources. Those are myths! It is spread through unprotected sex.
Misunderstanding #3: Gonorrhea can grow into more serious infections if not treated.
The truth is that each STD is a separate disease. One cannot grow into another. For example, Gonorrhea will not turn into Syphilis, Chlamydia will not turn into Herpes, and so forth. It is possible, however; to have multiple STDs at the same time!
First Med Urgent Care recommends that you and your partner get tested for STDs prior to having sex. If you receive antibiotics to treat Gonorrhea it is recommended that you get re-tested to be sure that the infection is cured. You shouldn’t have sex again until you are sure both you and your partner no longer have the disease.
